“Stay woke; keep the eyes open.”

— Lead Belly, at the very end of an interview about his 1938 recording, “The Scottsboro Boys.”

American blues and folk music artist Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) wrote this song about the arrest, near-lynching, conviction and imprisonment of 9 young men falsely accused of raping two women in Scottsboro, Arkansas in 1931.

Their only crime was the color of their skin.
